Penn State football: Chris Godwin's performance under the radar, but key, in Lions' Pinstripe Bowl win

NEW YORK -- Chris Godwin needed to be reliable Saturday at Yankee Stadium. The 12 games that came before the Pinstripe Bowl here made sure No. 12 could handle it.

The Penn State freshman receiver was not the man of the hour Saturday, at least not in the games final moments. Rather, it was tight ends Jesse James and Kyle Carter who stole the final curtain with a big third down conversion and a touchdown catch that led to a game-winning extra point, respectively.

But Godwin ensured they got there, finishing with a team-high seven catches for 140 yards and a touchdown in the Lions' 31-30 overtime victory over Boston College.

"We had Godwin in position to make some plays for us, he did," Penn State head coach James Franklin said."

With just 198 receiving yards to his name entering the season finale, Godwin was forced to become a key piece in the Lions' cog because leading receiver DaeSean Hamilton was suffering from a hamstring issue that has slowed him for the last four weeks, according to Franklin. So even though Godwin had no catches in the regular season finale against Michigan State, and just five total in the three games before that, he would have to be responsible for much of the Lions' offense.

And he didn't just do that. He did it with ease. The freshman caught four passes in the first half for 100 yards and a score -- on a 72-yard first quarter bomb from quarterback Christian Hackenberg -- before adding to his totals after the half, including a nine-yard catch to spark Penn State's game-tying drive early in the fourth quarter.

Three Penn State receivers recorded seven catches, and Hackenberg targeted eight different pass catchers total as the Lions threw for more than 300 yards for the first time since Hackenberg threw for 309 in a September win over Rutgers.

Godwin had just three catches in that win, a side note to big days from Hamilton and Geno Lewis. Saturday, all three had big days, leading to a big Penn State victory.

"The future is very, very bright here," Franklin said. "Very excited."
